Introduction to Field Survey

This seminar introduces the participants to the principles of Landscape Survey and the use of es UTM, USNG, PLSS, and GPS coordinate systems and instruction of using a Quad map. Practical exercises in compass and sextant mapping angles, Plane Table and DSM surveying.

INTRO TO MARITIME ARCHAEOLOGY DISTINCTIVE SPECIALTY

The purpose of the PADI Introduction to Maritime Archaeology Distinctive Specialty course is to familiarize the diver with skills, knowledge, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards, and enjoyment of Maritime Archaeology. The course is intended to serve as a controlled, supervised introduction to Maritime Archaeology and should emphasize fun and safety.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • PADI Advanced Open Water Certification (or equivalent from another certification agency) required.
  • Online learning modules and Knowledge Reviews will be assigned and must be completed prior to the scheduled diving dates.
  • There will be one confined and two open water dives.
  • A minimum of 4 students is required to conduct this course.
  • In addition, students must have DAN diving insurance and are responsible for the costs associated with the textbook, travel, lodging, meals, entry fees, scuba equipment rental, tanks and air.

**Note: The NAS Intro and PADI Intro course together is equivalent to NAS Level 1/NAS Introduction to Maritime Archaeology award).  To receive NAS credit, you must be a member of the Nautical Archaeology Society.

PADI BLACKWATER ARCHAEOLOGY COURSE

The purpose of the PADI Blackwater Archaeology Specialty Diver Course is to teach the student diver the skills and techniques necessary to perform underwater archaeology in a no-visibility or low-visibility environment safely.

Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, or open water with the  following specialties: Navigation, Deep, and Wreck
  • Online learning modules and Knowledge Reviews will be assigned and must be completed prior to the scheduled diving dates.
  • There will be two confined and two open water dives.
  • A maximum of two students per instructor
  • In addition, students must have DAN diving insurance and are responsible for the costs associated with the textbook, travel, lodging, meals, entry fees, scuba equipment rental, tanks and air.

NAS Credit: Eligible for 5 NAS Maritime Archaeology Fieldwork Credits
