The primary purpose of this book, published in February 2023 by the Archeological Society of Virginia, is to provide information about underwater and maritime history and archaeology to avocational archaeologists and recreational divers, but much of the text should be of interest to a wide audience. The book defines the special terminology we use, discusses the importance of understanding the significance of our society’s maritime connections, and why we should protect underwater sites, and then describes many of the most useful tools and techniques for investigating and documenting those sites. There are also numerous appendices with suggested reading lists, an extensive list of agencies and organizations involved in maritime heritage activities, and many others.
