The Maritime Heritage Chapter’s “Mid-Atlantic Logboat Registry” project has received a $5000 grant from the Institute for Nautical Archaeology (INA) to support the documentation and analysis of dugout canoes throughout Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. Project leads Bob and Mary Hayes have already visited the Virginia and Maryland State Historic Preservation Offices to record canoe data in their site files. Plans call for including North Carolina’s many canoes in this study. Project advisors John Broadwater and Bruce Terrell are excited about the progress to date and the project team hopes to develop a preliminary logboat typology that will help identify and classify future finds. The logboat project was recently approved as an ASV project.
